The five-colored volcanic ponds of Mt. Bandai

Goshiki-numa, or Five-Colored Ponds, in Fukushima Prefectures were formed from a deadly volcanic eruption of nearby Mt. Bandai in July 1888. These volcanic lakes are vibrantly colored with yellows, greens, reds, and blues thanks to the minerals from the eruption. There is a 4-km nature trail that connects the lakes. It is not a difficult trail and you walk through nicely shaded areas full of wild flowers and mossy ancient trees. The lakes change colors depending on the season and weather. When I was there in September, the main colors were vibrant turquoise and potion-like yellow-greens.
