Olympic fever is building in Tokyo! Preparations for the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games are well underway. One of the most important venues is the New National Stadium, set to open this fall. It replaces the former National Stadium which was used for the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games.
The new building was designed by internationally-acclaimed Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. While the stadium features the latest in communication technology, it also honors Japan’s heritage and affinity for nature. Inspired by the 1,300-year-old pagoda at Horyuji Temple in Nara, Kuma’s design incorporates wood from native trees. This wood has come from each of Japan’s 47 prefectures.
The stadium can seat 68,000 people, but can be increased to as many 80,000 with additional temporary seating. New National Stadium will be the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as for track and field events, during both the Olympics and Paralympics. It’s also where the Olympic soccer games will take place. After the 2020 Games are complete, the stadium will be used for sporting and cultural events.
Ahead of the Olympics and Paralympics, the stadium’s first official sporting event will take place on January 1st in 2020. This will be the final of the Emperor’s Cup, Japan’s national soccer league championship.
