Manmaru (Circular) is an izakaya located in Zoshiki Tokyo near Oakhouse Kamata. The owner of the store, Mrs. Ririko, had chosen the name Manmaru picturing a circular table. “A table that is circular is welcoming,” she said, “Because a circular table allows people to join in, while a table with corners may leave some people out”.

Although the tables in Manmaru are not circular, the atmosphere is a welcoming one in which anyone who comes through the door can feel at home. This small izakaya is a place not known to many, but those who know it seem to be regular customers. Ririko is friendly, casual, and sweet. She memorizes the orders of her frequent customers and has pleasant conversations asking about their days. I had come to Manmaru by recommendation of a friend, a couple of friends in fact, who were all residents of Oakhouse Kamata the share house I was staying at. The store was exactly as advertised by them, and just a few moments after entering, I fell in love with this place.

We ordered a little bit of everything and all shared. Every dish was delicious! If you are not a native speaker, I do recommend that you come with someone who is, because the menu is written in Japanese and there are no pictures. Their menu also tends to change, depending on the day, but if you're new to Japanese food, I recommend the corn tempura, (which is a summer only dish), the braised pork, and the ichibo (marinated beef). Everything on the menu is to die for, but those are some safe and satisfying choices.

Manmaru is also particular in the drinks they serve, and they will make sure you're getting the good stuff. Not being a heavy drinker, I ordered green tea with shōchū, which was smooth and went well with the food dishes. They offer many different types of Japanese drinks, depending on your level, so it’s a good place to explore and try different things. Come by with friends, family, or for a date, and enjoy the cozy atmosphere. Once you're there, you’re sure to become a regular.
