The Oya Shiryokan (website in Japanese) opened in 1979 to showcase the town of Oya's mining history. Housed in a 20,000 square meter ex-quarry, visitors are left speechless at the sheer size of this man-made cavern. A gift shop, cafe, and interesting museum welcome guests at ground level. Stairs lead down some 30 meters to the underground mining area. Once inside, be sure to wander around and explore all the dark corners of this fantastic location.

The quarry is sometimes illuminated by creative lighting.
Even the area surrounding the parking lot is impressive.
The entrance to the museum gives no hint to the massive cavern that lies beneath.
Historical material, photos, tools, etc. are on display in the museum.
These steps take you down into the quarry. Note that there is no stroller or handicapped access.
This is the first view that visitors see upon entering the quarry. It is very impressive.
The space is larger in volume than the Tokyo Dome.
Due to wonderful acoustics, concerts are often held here. Some Japanese music videos and movies have been filmed here as well.
This area is used as a temporary art gallery. The exhibits change regularly.
Want to get married in an unusual location? Wedding ceremonies are sometimes performed in this space.
The museum is open from 9am to 5:00pm, with last entry at 4:30pm. It is closed from 12/28-1/1 and for special events that are not indicated on their website. Call ahead to make sure they'll be open.
The entrance fee is 700 yen for adults and 350 yen for children. Check out their website for more details: www.oya909.co.jp
