Asakusa Culture & Lights 2025

Ancient tradition combined with cutting-edge technology

Data
Dec 3rd - Dec 7th 2025

This December, Tokyo’s historic Sensoji Temple will host Asakusa Culture & Lights, an illumination event combining ancient tradition with cutting-edge technology. Held from December 3rd to 7th, the event will feature large-scale projection mapping on three of the temple’s most iconic structures: the Hozomon Gate, the five-story pagoda, and the Nitenmon Gate. It marks the first time in Sensoji’s long 1,400-year history that its buildings will be transformed through digital art.

Produced by creative studio HITOHATA, the show uses dynamic visuals inspired by Sensoji’s deep cultural heritage. The animations will illuminate the temple grounds each evening from 5:30 to 9:30 pm, and viewing is free with no reservations required.

In addition to the projection mapping, visitors will have the rare opportunity to explore the scenic Denpoin Garden and the Emadou Hall, which are both normally closed to the public. These areas will open for the first time in seven years, with daytime and illuminated nighttime viewings available by advance reservation (fees apply).
