Set against the dramatic coastline and volcanic landscapes of Izu Oshima, the Camellia Marathon is a long-running community race that has drawn runners to the island for over half a century. Despite its name, this is not a traditional full marathon. Instead, the event focuses on accessible 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer courses designed to be enjoyed by participants of many ages and fitness levels.

Held during the island's iconic Camellia Festival, the run takes place at the height of camellia blooming season, when vivid red and pink flowers transform the island's roadsides and parks. Both courses start and finish near Oshima Town Hall, guiding runners along scenic coastal and town routes filled with fresh sea air and a lively festival atmosphere.

One of the event's most appealing features is that participation is completely free. The run is open to everyone from elementary school students to adults, and all participants receive an original event T-shirt along with access to an online finisher's certificate after the race. The emphasis is on enjoyment and community rather than elite competition.

The Camellia Marathon actively welcomes runners from outside the island, and many visitors turn the race into a weekend getaway, combining running with local seafood, hot springs, and festival activities held across the island.
