The Nezu-jinja Shrine

A gorgeous little shrine in the heart of Tokyo

Another gorgeous temple hidden in plain sight! According to the temple’s history, the Nezu Temple or Nezu-Jinha Shrine was founded 1900 years ago by the legendary priest Yamato Takeru no Mikoto in Sendagi (Near Nippori).

It was only during the Edo era that the temple was relocated to its current location. Like the Toshogu Shrine in Ueno, the Nezu-Jinja Shrine is styled after Nikko’s Toshogu Shrine also known as Gongen, or Ishinoma-zukuri, style.

But perhaps the most well-known features about this temple among foreigners is its long Torii pathway (Red arch) located on the left hand side of the temple and that it is surrounded by azalea bushes.
